Urgent Eye Care Service

Symptoms that can be seen under the service include:

  • Red or painful eye or eyelids.
  • Recently occurring flashes or floaters.
  • Recent and sudden loss of vision.
  • Foreign body in the eye.

This is an NHS service provided by accredited optometrists (also commonly known as opticians).

Please note that this service is not an eye test. If you have a major eye condition that is being regularly monitored by your optometrists or hospital eye service, this will not be covered by this service, for example, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma.  Contact your regular service provider for any advice.

Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS)

If you are experiencing:

  • Red eye or eyelids.
  • Dry, gritty or uncomfortable eyes.
  • Eye irritation and inflammation.
  • A lot of recent discharge from the eye or watery eye.
  • Recently occurring flashes or floaters.
  • Painful eye.
  • Ingrowing lashes.
  • Recent and sudden loss of vision.
  • Foreign body in the eye.

Who are Primary Eyecare?

Primary Eyecare is the largest single primary eye care provider in England. Primary Eyecare contracts with NHS CCGs and Trusts to make NHS-funded eyecare services available from local eye care practices, from small independent practices to large national chains. It is an optometry federation which aims to support optical practices and patients by broadening the eye care services available from local optical practices.
